so as you all know, i am obsessed with harry potter. so naturally when j.k. rowling announced pottermore, an interactive way to explore the books online, i jumped at the opportunity to join the beta group and get early access. (some of you who haven't read the books may not understand why a grown ass woman such as myself would be so invested in a silly online game, but the opportunity to read previously unreleased content about the world of harry potter is something i really can't turn down. read the books, you'll see.) this weekend my welcome email finally came! i got to sign in, explore the new content, buy my wand at ollivanders, and most importantly - get sorted into my house. which house you belong to has always been a big topic of discussion among potter fans, but i have never been able to tell if i am more of a ravenclaw or a gryffindor. this 7 question quiz is the definitive quiz, crafted by j.k. rowling herself, and i was super excited to see where i would end up. as it turns out, i'm a ravenclaw! i was so proud to be sorted into the house known for their intelligence, creativity, and eccentricity. (luna lovegood is also my favorite harry potter character, and i am thrilled to be in the same house as her.) ryan was also sorted into ravenclaw as well, so i like to think that even if we went to hogwarts, we still would have ended up together. ;) after reading the official description and history of the house, i found myself inspired to show some house spirit! the ravenclaw colors are navy blue and gold and the symbol is a raven, so i decided to style up a dream outfit inspired by those themes that i might wear to show my pride. what do you think?
as of tomorrow (in north america), autumn is officially upon us. when i was younger summer was my favorite season, for obvious reasons - no school, <a href="http://spinnersendvintage.blogspot.com/2011/07/cape-may.html"target="_blank">vacations to the jersey shore, warm weather to ride my bike in, summer clothes, endless daylight savings sun, fireworks, and enough barbecue to stuff me silly. however, now that i'm older and a few years out of college i'm finding that the fall may in fact be my favorite season. without a summer vacation or school year to break things up i find myself really enjoying the change of the seasons. this summer was brutally hot for many places in the us and i am so thrilled to finally feel comfortable outside again (and to break out my fall wardrobe).

i'm not sad to see this summer go, but i must say it was a pretty amazing time for me and ryan. we started this blog, wrote some new songs, collaborated with visionary director (and close friend) brandon monokian on 3 plays for princeton public library's "page to stage" series, and we booked and played <a href="http://spinnersendvintage.blogspot.com/2011/09/our-first-show.html"target="_blank">our first official show as spinner's end. one of my fondest memories of this summer was working on the musical score we composed for brandon's production of <a href="http://spinnersendvintage.blogspot.com/2011/07/eurydice.html"target="_blank">eurydice by sarah ruhl for "page to stage." brandon recently <a href="http://www.youtube.com/user/brandonmonokian"target="_blank">posted a youtube video of ryan and me (and our beautiful friend and collaborator, the very talented amanda ada guzman) workshopping a scene from eurydice. since i've been asked to post more songs and videos, i thought you might want to check it out!

this was taken at our first or second rehearsal, and the songs definitely grew and changed a bit from what you see here before our actual performance. this was basically a rough walk-through of our first scene in the play. if you haven't read <a href="http://spinnersendvintage.blogspot.com/2011/07/eurydice.html"target="_blank">my earlier post about the play, ryan and i took the words of 3 characters called the "stones" and combined them, unedited and unabridged, as lyrics. together, ryan, the keyboard, and i became the stones, and the script became a libretto of sorts. each song was written around the words that we were given by the playwright, but the music is entirely original. in fact, some of the melodies and music found in this video has been extrapolated and transformed into a new song, with original lyrics, that ryan and i just finished writing tonight! this experience is one that i know i will always cherish, not only for the opportunity to write new music, but as the first of many future collaborations with brandon and amanda.

so what were some of your favorite memories from this past summer? are you sad to see it go or glad to welcome the fall?Spinner's Endhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06769655918699557638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265238686035711543.post-32385986307656947792011-09-16T14:33:00.000-04:002011-09-16T14:33:32.098-04:00project runway: modcloth?so i don't know about you all, but ryan and i are obsessed with the current season of project runway. i have always loved the show, but i've never been so invested in a cast before. last night's episode was another great one and the top three looks from viktor, anya, and josh mckinley were all gorgeous. though josh's look was the winner for the evening, viktor's look was the one to really set my heart aflutter. then i realized why. i'm sure you've all seen modcloth's new lookbook for their going places collection by now, and if you haven't you should really check it out. i realized that the "effortless interview" look may as well be the ready to wear version of viktor's look. brilliant! finally a project runway look that i can recreate myself. so what do you ladies think? was viktor channeling modcloth or what?
i'm totally inspired by both outfits! the silhouette of the skirt is super flattering for nearly any body type. it's sophisticated but fun, and could easily be dressed down with a casual tank and some flats. and i am in love with this color combo.. the navy and goldenrod are totally retro, but the sleek gray keeps it modern. in fact, i may have been subconsciously channeling both looks myself, as i'm wearing a pair of goldenrod tights today! so what do you think? are you totally loving this look for fall?Spinner's Endhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06769655918699557638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265238686035711543.post-21885047247214168372011-09-15T22:18:00.003-04:002011-09-16T12:05:16.716-04:00speak to me: wedding bells.no, not for me and ryan, silly. that would be ridiculous, we're way too young. on sunday, ryan's cousin becci married her long time boyfriend ian! they are pretty badass (as evidenced by becci's styling of her wedding dress below) and their wedding definitely had an unofficial old school punk theme. after a sweet & simple ceremony outdoors among the fruit trees, we headed inside for one of the most fun & unconventional receptions i've ever attended. the friend of theirs who officiated the ceremony was also the lead singer of the band that played the reception. he had this total rancid/mighty mighty bosstones throaty punk voice and silly personality and they covered many punk and rock classics. but for this week's speak to me post, i was inspired by the song that the groom ian sang as a surprise gift to his new bride during the reception. i present to you "ring of fire

we did it! spinner's end has officially played our first real show. we would like to thank field of creams cafe in mahwah, nj for having us on friday, it was really fun! we were the only band playing that evening so we got to play for almost two hours, much longer than i've ever played before.
i've been performing on stage for many years as an actress and (when i was younger) a dancer, but there's definitely something different about playing live music. there is no character to play, no story to advance, no costumes, or sets, or disguises to hide behind. the focus is just on me and ryan in that moment. i think that's why i love to play music. after years of pretending to be other people, music is the one place i'm forced to be nothing but true to myself. writing songs with the person i love, taking the music he gives me and blending it with my melodies and notebook scribbled words, is a very personal thing and singing them live in front of other people is a little bit scary, a little bit exhilarating, and very freeing.

the lovely owners of field of creams have asked us to come back and play some time in october! we also just booked a spa re-launch party on the 23rd and are playing a fundraising event to support victims of domestic violence on october 13th, so our calendar is actually starting to fill up! make sure to check our "upcoming shows" page for all the details. my uncle dennis is currently in the process of building a private recording studio in his attic that should be ready for use in about a month or so. once it's up and running ryan and i will actually be able to record our songs and share them with you all on the blog! i just know you're all dying to get your hands on the first spinner's end album.. ;P

come with me my love
to the sea, the sea of love
i wanna tell you how much i love you.

do you remember when we met?
that's the day i knew you were my pet.
i wanna tell you how much i love you.

come with me my love
to the sea, the sea of love
i wanna tell you how much i love you.
ryan and i have been practicing furiously all week in preparation for our show on friday. tonight we had a really great writing session - we finally finished a song we've been working on for a while and i'm really happy with the way it turned out. i'll definitely be posting more on that soon, hopefully with a new video to share. if you can't tell from my sparse (to put it lightly) blog design, i'm no graphic artist. but my mother actually works in graphic design. earlier this week i was lamenting to my mom that ryan and i didn't have any sort of promotional flyer or business card to hand out to people that might be interested in our band. she played it cool while we were talking and i thought nothing more about it, but then today she handed me these.

don't they look great? they're printed on this really lovely paper and are just the right size. she modified one of my favorite typefaces to include that little music note and even added a spinning wheel. i'm so thankful that i have a mom who cares enough to take time out of her super busy day to surprise me with something so nice. i'm really lucky to have her. now i feel really confident that we have something professional to share with people if they'd like to book us for a show or learn more about our band.

1. spinner's end has officially booked our first official show! it's at this cute little cafe called "field of creams" at continental soldiers park, right across the street from ramapo college, in mahwah, nj. we'll be playing on september 9 from 7pm to 9pm. information for the show can be found <a "="" href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=278401318840336" target="_blank">here. field of creams is also one of the only places in the area that serves bubble tea, a hard-to-find personal favorite of mine. the cafe serves all kinds of yummy food, from the usual fare like burgers, veggie burgers, and milkshakes to things that are a little more special, like homemade crepes, wildberry smoothies, and the aforementioned bubble tea. we're the only band playing that evening so if you're in the area pop in and check us out, we would love to see you there!

2. we got a kitty!
her name is nala and ryan and i could not be more smitten. she's just the sweetest little thing. we adopted her through a great organization called FOCAS on august 20 (check out their website for information on adopting or to donate). she's four months old and her birthday is actually the day before mine. nala has settled right into life in our small apartment and is ruling over the place like the queen she is.

my family are definitely not cat people, so i was never allowed to have one growing up. nala is my first ever kitty and i just love her so much! i've always wanted a kitty of my own, and once i picked her up i knew i never wanted to put her down again.

so now that you've seen our pretty little lady, i hope you can forgive me for my blogging break. ryan and i also went to a really great rubblebucket show a few weeks ago, which i'll be blogging about soon. i'll be back on monday with a regular blogging schedule once more. enjoy your labor day weekend, everybody!
Nick is 12 and a hockey player (you may remember him as co-writer/guitarist of our Harry Potter song) and had spent the previous week in Lake Placid's CAN/AM Hockey camp. My parents had decided to stay up there for the week and use it as their vacation. After much begging and pleading Ryan and I decided to take the long drive up and spend the weekend. Boy am I glad we did.

My brother is growing up so fast and let me tell you he is getting bigger by the day. He's already got an inch or two on me (not that it's hard) and I think he'll be even taller by 2012. There is actually a ten year age difference between Nick and I, but the way we get along you'd never know it. Mostly I chalk it up to the fact that I also behave like a 12 year old boy in most situations. Seriously though, he's an amazing guitarist and singer and a great hockey player. The kid is going places fast.

Sometimes I really just need to remind myself: I started this blog as a fun, creative outlet through which I could share my music and meet people. I did not start it to add more pressure and stress to my life. I'm not going for the best blog of the universe award or anything. Yes, it sucks that I currently cannot find my digital camera, my video camera's battery charger, or any of their connecting wires. But then I remind myself, I just moved in June. There are still a few unpacked boxes that are probably hiding these items. Yes, this means that all the videos and photos that I'd like to be posting here are trapped on their devices or are as of yet unrealized. But that doesn't mean that I'm "failing" at this blog. It just means I have to wait a little to post those things and I need to be a little creative with the content in the mean time. No big deal. Yes, it would be nice if I could afford a digital SLR camera (like the Nikon D3100 I've had my eye on), so I could take my blog photos to the next level. But I'm living the broke life, and it's better to be realistic and remind myself I have to use my money for things like food and rent and bills. And isn't this a good incentive to work a little harder at finding paid gigs for the band to play? Yes, it sucks that my blog's layout isn't as unique and beautiful as I'd like it to be. But that doesn't mean I can't change it in the future. Sure, I can't afford a web designer right now. But that doesn't mean the blog will look like this forever. I'll figure it out. That's the thing I really need to remind myself. I always figure it out. I may suffer from anxiety. Sometimes I let it get the best of me. But then I remind myself, I always resurface on the other side. Usually with a solution. So this post is going to be my reminder to be at peace with the state of my blog. There is no reason for these silly little problems to get me flustered. It stops today.

This is what's important: I am putting myself out there. I haven't put myself out there in a while and it can be kind of scary. But I like myself, so it doesn't matter if other people don't. I like my music and I have to play it, it's bursting out of me. If people don't like it, who cares. I'll play it anyway.

So how about you? I'm sure you all have a million silly little problems that you let bother you, even when you know better. How do you remind yourself of what's really important?Spinner's Endhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06769655918699557638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1265238686035711543.post-43527406701906896172011-07-28T13:34:00.001-04:002011-08-03T10:04:54.488-04:00Prose-colored glasses. The show last night was a hit! If you haven't heard, Spinner's End had our big debut in Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice at the Princeton Public Library last night, as part of their Page to Stage series. It went so well and the audience loved our musical spin on the story! I'm fairly sure there are some pictures and videos floating around out there, so as soon as I get my hands on them I'll post them to the blog for all of you lovely people out there to see. It looks like some Important Theater People may have liked the show enough to give us another staging opportunity.. fingers crossed! If we get to produce the show again, I'd love to expand on the music we wrote and maybe even involve some more musicians in the process. We shall see! Either way, a nice relationship has been established between our band and the amazing people that work to bring art programs to Princeton's gorgeous library. Hopefully more opportunities will follow!

I'm so jazzed by how well things went that I've decided to be a little brave and post some of my prose on here. I'd like to include some of my writing from time to time as a feature on the blog here, so consider this the first of many. I don't normally write prose, I'm really more of a haiku poet and lyricist, but in the name of bravery I figured I'd jump right out of my comfort zone with my first post. However, since I've been working furiously for the past few weeks on Eurydice, I don't exactly have anything new to share. So this is a piece I wrote about three or four years ago that I'd love to share with you all. Feel free to let me know what you think, I encourage constructive criticism and would love to discuss the piece in the comments with anyone who has something to say. I call it "the boy in the car behind me." Check it out after the jump.

Ali here, with a little update on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=231457230227647"target="_blank">what we've been up to lately... Ryan and I have spent the past two weeks working on a unique theater project, writing a score for a staged reading of Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl as part of the Princeton Public Library's Page to Stage series. We were also cast in the play, as the Stones. Spinner's End is a relatively new band, so being offered this kind of opportunity was a real thrill for both of us. Now, I am close friends with the amazing director Brandon Monokian, so that may have been part of the reason we got the gig. However, we are not the type to take an opportunity like this lightly, nepotism be damned. We dove headfirst into this project and wrote the bulk of the music in three furious writing sessions. It's been a hell of an experience and we are both so excited for the show tomorrow!

In case you've never heard of this beautiful play, here's the story. It's a modern twist on the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, this time through tragic heroine Eurydice's eyes. Eurydice and Orpheus are young and in love - maybe too in love. They're getting married! But then, tragedy strikes on their wedding day when the Lord of the Underworld aka A Nasty Interesting Man comes along and decides to make Eurydice his own. She "trips" down a huge flight of stairs and dies. In this strange world, when you die you are dipped in the River of Forgetfulness & you shed all memories of your past life. In the underworld she encounters the Stones.. a group of three strange creatures that serve as the Lord of the Underworld's gatekeepers and welcome committee. Things get really interesting when Eurydice's father, who died when she was young, appears and somehow remembers his daughter. Add in Orpheus's unwavering devotion to finding her and bringing her back to life, and you've got a recipe for an emotional, poignant, and sweet tale of what it means to love and be loved.

Usually, the Stones are played by three actors, the Little Stone, the Big Stone, and the Loud Stone. In our version, the Stones have been consolidated and morphed into me, Ryan, and the piano. Every line that would normally be spoken (save one sarcastic line that goes to Ryan) is instead sang by me, accompanied by Ryan. I went to college for Acting, but I haven't actually done a play since I graduated. Though I love acting, my focus has definitely shifted to music and making Spinner's End my number one priority. It's been really amazing not only having an opportunity to act again, but also for Ryan and I to take Sarah Ruhl's beautiful and brilliant words and turn them into songs. The surreal, heightened, poetic quality of the lines translates beautifully as lyrics. I'm so proud of the work we've done these past two weeks, and I think that the audience tomorrow is in for something really unique, interesting, and honest. The other actors in the play are giving really strong performances and Brandon's directorial vision is really beautiful. If any of you internet folk out there are free tomorrow, Wednesday the 27th, and live in the Princeton area, please come check it out! And if you're not able to come, I still suggest you get your hands on a copy of Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice. You won't regret reading it.
Summer is usually my favorite season but this heat is so oppressive it's making me long for cool autumn nights. Ryan and I have spent the past few days holed up in our bedroom, for lo there is the air conditioning, and it is good. However for those moments when you have to go out and face the terrible sauna outside (like going to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in IMAX, like we are tonight!), it's good to have some tricks to keep cool.

My tip for the ladies is milkmaid braids.

Ryan's tip for the menfolk: mustachio!

He finally caved in the heat and decided to shave off his beard. His facial hair had gotten really long, so I made him promise me that he'd shave the beard off first and let me take a picture of him with a silly mustache. I thought it would just be for a laugh, but now I actually really like it. Ryan's decided to keep it for now, as a mustache is much less sweaty than a beard and therefore still acceptable for the weather. I think it makes him look like a Spanish Conquistador or Musketeer or George Harrison. Whichever it is, 'tis yes.

Ryan and I (and my brother, who helped us out with guitar) are huge Harry Potter fans. HUGE. We figured that in honor of the final movie in the series (tear!) being released, we would post this little video. I, like many awkward girls around the world, identify a lot with Hermione Granger. I, too, was a mousy little bookworm when I was younger, though my nose was buried in Harry Potter books rather than Hogwarts: A History. I had an epic crush on my best guy friend in high school (Ryan) who seemed completely oblivious, so the Ron and Hermione story always resonated with me. The song takes place during Half-Blood Prince, during that awful time for Hermione (and subsequently Harry) when Ron is dating Lavender. I have always felt a deep connection to this love story, so much so that this song practically wrote itself. When I was cheering for Hermione, on some level, I was also cheering for myself. The lessons I learned from those incredible books will be with me for a lifetime. J.K. Rowling's characters are so vibrant that they seem to take on a life of their own, and I know I'm not alone when I say that I cherished them almost as if they were my friends. We would like to dedicate this song to J.K. Rowling as a thank you for the beautiful world she created, a world that helped us escape from our own, and the characters that we will carry in our hearts forever.
But we just got back from a really great weekend away with my family. If you've never been to Cape May, I suggest you make a trip. It really is the cutest little beach town. Everything from the architecture of the homes to the quirky little shops is very picturesque and old-fashioned. I think the best way to describe Cape May to someone from out of state would be this. Picture everything you think you know about the Jersey Shore: Snooki, the Situation, the fake tans, the fake boobs, the you-can't-possibly-be-a-real-person nightmares. Let's start by introducing ourselves? I'm Ali and sitting right next to me is Ryan. We are Spinner's End, a new band based out of Northern New Jersey. We're also dating. (It's pretty serious.) We're actually writing this post from our couch in our new-ish, adorable (read: tiny) apartment. This is the same apartment in which we are currently writing and producing our first album, as well as where we eat a lot of cereal and watch too many re-runs of The Office. I've been reading several blogs regularly for about four years now but I've never had the guts to speak up myself. Now that we've started our band, however, I finally feel like I've got some cool stuff to share. I'll be the main voice of the blog here, but Ryan will be piping in too now and again. This is going to be our new home on the internet, where you can expect videos of our original songs, cover songs, as well as a lot of other cool features we have planned. Our apartment has yet to be fully decorated and, seeing as we're pretty broke, I'll be doing most of it myself. I will share my crafty little projects here, and maybe even some DIY tutorials. I'm also an avid thrifter and vintage shopper, so if I ever scrape enough money together to go shopping, I'd like to share tips, tricks, and up-cycling ideas. Once I find the cable for my camera, there will even be pictures.
We're currently in the writing phase of both our own album and the soundtrack of a play we've been cast in (more on that later). Ryan and I pretty much breathe music. Our tastes are all over the map, but generally we both love progressive rock, classic rock, indie rock, and most things groovy. We're giant hippies, as evidenced by the length of Ryan's massive hair and generally unkempt beard. Our current favorite artists include Rubblebucket, The Dear Hunter, Franz Ferdinand, Skrillex, and Lady Gaga (just to name a few). Like I said, our tastes are all over the place. We're really big on inspiration while we're writing, so our current appetite for new music is huge. So what are you guys currently listening to? Leave us a comment, introduce yourself, tell us your favorite band. We're also here to make friends, so feel free to ask us questions!
